We may not have any alternatives at the moment but open question to other engineers, why has this happened even though public and private money is pouring into battery research?

What's your basis for that? I see articles on phys.org everyday about researchers who are doing interesting things with batteries. It's hard to believe that with everything going on in the world that, say, somebody hasn't developed some supplies of cobalt less bad than the major ones.
