And while I could happily spend all day doing this, I'm noticing that my eyes are beginning to suffer, and that it would be wise for me to not spend so much of my time in front of a computer screen, even though it's something I enjoy.
I was wondering what techniques or routines people have to address this, so that they're taking breaks from their screens in a meaningful way. Or perhaps, are using hacks or techniques so that they're able to continue using screens, without straining their eyes (I read that using differentials whilst on the computer, may help).
For me, the only thing that's really worked has been exercise, because that gets me out of the house, and makes me feel like I'm doing something enjoyable, whilst not pursuing my screen-based work.
How have others approached this problem?
- Put a chair in the garden and sit in it for a while. I like a big camp chair and a foot rest. Sometimes I'll listen to the shortwave, sometimes I'll whittle, sometimes draw. (If it's cold then it's a test of my winter gear too)
- Lay down, put on some favorite music, grab a portable keyboard, and play along.
- Similar with a suggested music playlist, putting Bluetooth speaker near my face, taking a stereo separation sound bath.
- Simple home tasks, like I enjoy sweeping so I put on some headphones and sweep leaves for a while
I usually do this kind of thing when my head or eyes start to feel that tired feeling. If I can, I try to give the activity at least 30-45 minutes. It's also a nice reset to prepare for some planning.
Good luck in finding whatever ends up working for you.
