What would the world look like if ChatGPT was free and self-hostable


I can imagine the positive things that we saw with Stable Diffusion vs DALL·E.

But I can also imagine the negative. For example, content marketing spam sites would be 1000x'ed within a week.

Let's jump forward a generation of GPT and it improves more. Facts are now 98% correct. If the ChatGPT 2 model and weights were released in the open, it seems possible that the economic/workforce disruption could be on the tragic side, since UBI does not exist.

Disinformation campaigns would get much more insidious.

Generally speaking, the signal to noise ratio on the net would become even worse.

Dare I say here that maybe it's not the worst thing in the world that OpenAI is operating the way it is?

Why am I wrong? Any other thoughts on this topic?

OpenAI, Stable Diffusion needs to create detectors and transparency tools for their models.

Without detectors, it will get worse, especially if open-sourced like Stable Diffusion. Right now, ChatGPT isn't open-source and once it is becomes paid the free-loaders will evaporate just like they did with GPT-3.

That is the main difference. If ChatGPT or an equivalent becomes open-source without detectors, a new griftopia will be created with the race to the bottom and towards zero.
