Without detectors, it will get worse, especially if open-sourced like Stable Diffusion. Right now, ChatGPT isn't open-source and once it is becomes paid the free-loaders will evaporate just like they did with GPT-3.
That is the main difference. If ChatGPT or an equivalent becomes open-source without detectors, a new griftopia will be created with the race to the bottom and towards zero.
