Would many CS researchers be happy as solo indie developers?

Maybe it's not so much that they find CS research to be more interesting than computer programming, but rather, they believe there is more freedom in the former than the latter?

And if so, maybe many CS researchers would be happy as solo indie developers?

I think CS researchers are disillusioned with the "$10/month fart button" apps that actually get funded, and would rather develop open software that everyone stands to gain from.

This is a great point. Lots of different initiatives could let CS researchers maintain their independence without having to take too much risk.

One thing could be universal income, which is sort of getting pilot testing in a few places now.

Another one could be more sane funding structures.

For example, ARIA UK will be trying to fund high-value projects and they are aware that they need to cut out middlemen / rent-seekers that plague Academia.
