How do you deal with HN FOMO?

Like some of you, I am an avid reader of HN, and I spend definitely too much time on it. I am going on holidays and I don’t want to engage with it, but at the same time I don’t want to lose great content. Have you guys found a solution?

The content will still be here when you get back. You can browse the front page for any given day in time: https://news.ycombinator.com/front?day=2022-11-23

Enjoy your holiday!

I suggest you to focus on the top 10 of daily HN posts. The top 10 posts are based on the point given by HN users. This method will limit your content consumption.

The website below provides the feature I was mentioning before. You can subscribe the RSS feed.

If you are looking for different topics, like Show HN and Ask HN, the website also provides them. These are coming in weekly basis.

Nowadays I read it once a week or so -- I think ?

It's a great community, but much of it just the same again and again. What great content in specific do you feel you lose ?

It's interesting.. I don't have TV anymore, and basically just focus on doing my work and spending time with my family/friends ... used to do a lot of side projects / read a lot of HN ... hasn't been the case for a couple of years now.

Guess I'm getting older :)

I dedicate a small window to HN each day to keep up. It gives context to my day as a software developer. New malicious backdoor in NPM I need to know about? That's something I need to know going forward. With HN, I see what's on my plate, read it, and move on. It's not an addiction (though for some it is).

I also avoid political stuff. Very easy to spot something that devolves into thinly veiled political rants, no matter how 'moderated' it is, things slip through the cracks.

For reading, the algolia interface allows you to choose an exact start (and end) date (+ sort by popularity). It is easy to jump directly to where you left off, even after, say (exactly) 55 days.

But you will miss out on the live interaction. (Rant alert) HN is VERY BAD at this. It is very hard to join conversations after a very short span of time (1 day, 2?)

1. Your threads are sorted by the date of your comment, not by the date of the last replies to them.

2. No notification

1 + 2 = you simply move with the flow, or am I missing something here?

Focus is more important than quantity of great content. There will always be more great content than you can consume or that you will even find useful.
