From my point of view, China's attacks in Ukraine, and obvious elephant in the room, 'unlimited alliance' with russia providing russia the full opportunity to wage the war has cost them greatly. Why is China doing this? They need the wheat. Brazil is getting awfully rich off china exporting them food; food is this important to china.

Lets not forget their military encroachment on india's north; clearly doing exactly what russia did to ukraine. Japan should be far less worried than india. Invading japan will be extremely difficult with near certainty of wmds becoming involved. I expect a war with india's north at the same time as japan and taiwan. This will certainly happen if midterms destabilize the usa.

Then the whole 'south china sea' which is really about fishing and the food as well. Hard to feed that many people, but they have population decline set in stone, so they have gone 'zero-covid' because the nightmare of population decline. But gotta feed their people, cant let them die. Though I bet there's some hidden old folks not getting red. Not to mention they arent vaccinating their elderly... they need less of them.

Coming back to OP. Japan is reading the writing on the wall. China has all the factories and a 500 million strong standing army; front lines likely to be older folks. Then also are tremendously destabilized because they seemingly let a virus out of their lab.

All this japan-Britain thing really is about is saying 'we do actually have friends, leave us alone.'

The whole 'taiwan' thing is silly to me. China already owns them, just as they own hong kong more than ever. There are more countries in the world who acknowledge palestine as their own country than taiwan. Taiwan literally has 0. At most they have an independence movement? So what?

The bargaining chip taiwan has was amazing investment in chip fabs. Except europe, usa, and many others have decided to spend billions and make taiwan irrelevant. The moment the many new fabs go online, taiwan...
