How important is a multi-cloud strategy?

Hey HN, we saw this market research by HashiCorp which suggests organizations small and large derive value from multi-cloud: https://www.hashicorp.com/state-of-the-cloud/2021

Obviously, there is a direct incentive by HashiCorp to advance this sentiment. How much does this ring true to your org?

I'm focussing on a single aspect of multi-cloud strategies: a multi-cloud strategy with a single cloud. A strategy is important insofar that it documents considerations of your organisation and delineates intent. A conscious decision (which states its reasons) to not follow a multi-cloud approach is still a multi-cloud strategy, albeit a trivial one. A single-cloud strategy which mandates that the technology architecture uses Kubernetes and Terraform and that applications are built cloud-native is still a multi-cloud strategy because it prepares the organisation for multi-cloud use.

Vendor lockin a real risk. But how big is it? And what is the cost to mitigate it, including the opportunity cost of foregoing other investments?

These answers will be different for each firm.
