Which organizations are the best at software development?

Yes, one can name Google or Uber as examples of places where great software development* takes place, but I'm curious what the HN community's take is on what other, non-obvious organizations or teams do this as well.

*I define great software development as those that produce the best outcomes compared to others. I think of rapid development/release, testable code, high-functioning teams, not only following best practices but creating innovating software as well.

Hands down, the best and most interesting software projects I've seen were usually created by 1-2 individuals.

Aside from that, maybe the current sqlite team. Also, the twisted python team back in the day.

Simply put: the best ones either sell software for a living (ie it didn’t just streamline the business) OR had a good engineer on the founding team. In my experience, there were no exceptions to this rule.

i think it depends on the type of software. Some organizations are better in cloud software but terrible in others. We should really look at it by niche instead of by general software development.
