How do you decide which system/software/product to use?

How do you decide which system/software/product to use? Let's say that you are starting a new project how do you decide if you will use GitLab or GitHub? Will you use AWS or GCP?

Do you base your decision on your previous experience, your knowledge, recommendations?

How do you break away from your standard "stack"? Do you say to your self "Let's see what is new in the world" and just dive into new tech stack?

I come up with some requirements and weights, both my own and my team's (like how will this impact the lives of designers, managers, etc.). Rule out things that won't work. Of the few remaining options, build simple prototypes and list out their pros and cons. Invite the team to take a look at the results. Vote on a finalist or two. Someone makes the call.

AWS was a pain for me (just try to create a Kubernetes cluster and using it on AWS vs GCP), so GCP. GitLab as opposed to GitHub (cleaner, cohesive, integrated).

Will you use AWS or GCP?

I refuse to force my customers to drink "Google" so I go with AWS. The word "Google" violates my personal code of ethics.
