How do you find out if a potential employer will work you to death?
What are some ways I can get an idea if the job is a 40-hour work week vs a 60+ hour work week without explicit asking it?
What's wrong with explicitly asking it? I do that and their response says everything. If they're defensive about why everyone needs to work 60+ hours, then that's what you'll get. If they're defensive about how work-life balance is important, then that's what you'll get too.
If they have leverage on you, then in effect, you have about as much access to labour rights protections as a slave does.
Why wouldn’t you ask? You’re afraid of not getting hired by a company that would work you to death?

The hard way. Like the rest of us ;)
first check the location. If you're inside EU, you're safe.
