Does your company force employees to travel for team gatherings?

I have been working remotely for the past 3 years. First for a local startup, and currently for another company in the other side of the country.

Although there are a couple team gatherings a year, it's totally fine to skip them. That's pretty good for me because I get quite anxious just by thinking on needing to travel alone.

However, this job is not working out, and I'm probably going to join a foreign company. In this case, the anxiety would be even worse, as we are talking now about a different country and language.

As I said, it's ok to avoid such team gatherings in my company, in fact, half of the team have never met, even though the culture says "regular team gatherings bla bla bla".

So, I'm wondering what's the situation in different companies. Is your company remote-first? Are employees forced to travel for team gathering? What if traveling would impact the mental health of the employee?

My company doesn't expect ICs (or even most managers) to travel for cross-site events. I doubt they want to pay for travel.
