What is a simple CMS for custom themes and with an admin WYSIWYG?

Hello all,

I am building a website for a friend, who occasionally wants to change the text and images on her site. The HTML and CSS is already done, now it's getting to the part where the site must be adopted to a CMS.

Initially I wanted to create a custom Wordpress theme but I feel Wordpress is getting very bloated. Not only for theme development but also I do not want to explain her all the features in the admin dashboard, only to change few lines of text.

The website is hosted on a simple web server with PHP and MySQL. Therefore, I am looking for a modern and reliable CMS, best in PHP for a simple installation.

I did already some research but feel like a lot of the CMS "like from the old days" are not maintained anymore, such as PicoCMS or require a different infrastructure, e.g. Ghost needs nodejs on the server.

Pricing wise it'd be cool if it would be free, or at least with a one-time-fee. No subscriptions please.

Do you have any recommendations?

I agree with your concerns regarding WordPress in this case however I still think that is your best bet.

You asked for:

  Modern, Reliable, Simple install,
  PHP, MySQL,
  Admin WYSIWYG, Custom themes,
  Free
WordPress has all those attributes which I think over-come your concern about bloat.
