What made you leave your comfortable tech role?

I've often wondered what it would take for me to leave my current, cushy, position at `big tech`. When I say cushy, I'm talking about the stereotypical tech role that you could coast on for 15 years, live a 1% (globally) life, retire early.

Every so often an interesting role comes my way, but it's never been "enough" (pay, prestige/title, lack of risk, and so on) for me to seriously consider changing paths.

I'm interested to hear everyone's story; so, why did you leave your similar-sounding role.

I'm not leaving at this present moment but I have in the past and the reasons are

- (significantly) more money and excitement contracting

- I am comfortable in my own skin, have good skills and ethos to work for myself and I do not fear of landing flat on my face.

- in/out of contract jobs, means I don't get exhausted on their politics

- politics, red tape, sinking in moving sand,...

- did I mention politics?
