As an individual how concerned should we be, and how can we prep/prevent?
Given it is transmitted by contact, it seems like avoiding hook-ups with promiscuous people and, generally, avoiding touching strangers in public if you can help it should suffice.
Wear a condom at all times, visibly; to demonstrate how much you Care about Society. Loudly demand others do so as well.
Remember to wipe after using equipment at the gym
