Internationally, regular (monthly) eSports viewers number about 250 million, while regular football/soccer viewers number about 4 billion and the estimate for the world cup this year is 5 billion viewers.
While there has been tremendous growth in eSports, I'm not sure the masses will jell with it the way they do with football/soccer, cricket, or field hockey.
Speaking personally, the whole experience of watching eSports needs to improve. Commentators tend to either be clueless or too niche. Spectator camera work tends to be terrible and frenetic. I just don't see the appeal and I have never been to a sports bar with an eSport match playing on any TV.
