Did Nat Kill FTP?

I tried recently to set up a FTP server on GCP (using vsftpd), and I couldn't get it work due to the server being behind a NAT and returning its internal IP address.

Considering that NAT are everywhere, is it still possible to run a FTP server these days without running constantly into that kind of issues? Or did NAT effectively kill FTP?
