Is there a use for Twitter hashtags?

The tagging of posts without having to resort to metadata. If anything, I wish it was a more common convention elsewhere. Helps to search by, say, topics or hobbies. It's the media craze of "hashtag (insert-marketing-campaign-relevant-for-a-week-here)" that gets old.
