Are there general-purpose tactile computers?

I was considering that a lot of modern computers have favoured slim keyboards, touchpads, and touch screens over more tactile experiences.

What factors caused this shift? Are there general-purpose computers that come with more tactile controls (think OP-1 synth level controls)?

I’d put it on cost and market needs. A membrane keyboard can be one-shot injection molded and that same membrane can then fit into many different keyboard designs. Touch screens are an instance where I’m not too certain they’re the cheaper option, however I think the cost reduction comes in software updates being free. An OP-1 isn’t an essential piece of kit even for professionals and you’ll find that same category of hardware exists for computers too.

Honestly most professionals probably don’t need that level of quality. I’d even go as far in saying if you need tools that reliable and expensive then likely they would almost never be for personal use. It comes down to consumers needing to understand the quality of the products they buy should only match their use expectations. Over-engineering an object is a waste of resources, and processes like injection molding aren’t nearly as bad for the environment as the public may think as long as the objects are useable to someone.
