Anyone having a hard time staying motivated with stocks low?
I know it's not officially a recession yet, but a lot of people in our industry have compensation that can be pretty stock heavy and tech stocks are down quite a bit. I've noticed I went from being very active/motivated during normal times, to struggling for motivation lately as my comp is down quite a bit from even my original offer. Just wondering if anyone else is feeling it like I am
If you've been involved in the stock market long enough you can recognize these corrections as excellent buying times. Sure, it hurts to lose money but the market can't go up forever. It's correcting, which means if you have a long timeline for investing now is an excellent time to get in. It's about a safe a bet as anything that in 20 years the market will be much higher than it is now -- and just like a house, you don't lose any money until you sell.
I just get a salary. My motivation was never that high to begin with. I get paid the same whether the company turns a small profit, a big profit, or just breaks even. I get paid the same even if the company takes a small loss. If the company takes a big loss, I don't take a pay cut; I just get laid off and collect unemployment while lining up my next gig. You could see that as a pay cut, but I see it as an unplanned paid sabbatical that I helped pre-pay through my payroll taxes.
If you're getting paid in stocks instead of legal tender, and those stocks aren't worth much right now, you can have a little of my sympathy as a treat. But only a little. Hold out long enough for another bull market and you'll be high on the hog again.
It's an excellent time to negotiate to get your options re-priced if they're below water. When the market goes back up, you'll be ahead.
Stocks will always be there so not really important to pay too much attention to it. On some days, it will go up and on some days it will go down, in the long-run what will really make a difference in our lives is our consistent efforts instead of whatever happens in the stock market.
I feel I can focus a lot more on my work now, as I don’t even want to look at how my stocks are doing. When my stocks were going up, I felt less motivation as I felt I didn’t need to work that hard to make $$$ (and wasted more time looking at tickers)
Then you made the mistake of letting your stock count for something when in fact it should be seen as icing on the cake. Your base salary should be what you found your plans and your motivation on, not the stock market.
