HACKER Q&A

When was the last time you used Reddit live chat with a fellow redditor?

…and for what purpose?

Just curious about user behaviours in large online communities. Personally I rarely use them, for no particular reason, just never had a real need.

Curious what everyone else thinks.

I saw a post where I noticed someone living in my country, sharing my most important values is having problems I've encountered earlier in my life. I sent him a message that if he's looking for someone to discuss with I'm here to help. It turned out he lives in my city so we met on the next day and had a coffee. Haven't used the chat before, nor afterwards.

Once, and I didn't initiate. It was a person that was so annoyed at my comment they decided to berate me on live chat. Blocked and never opened the thing again.

I would wonder what portion of hn users exclusively use old.reddit and have no exposure to any new features at all

Asked a genuine question related to crypto regarding key and ownership.

Was so heavily spammed by bots (assumption). Did not reply to any of them (as the sub-reddit mod comment mentioned not to).

So yeah, that time. Apart from that I rarely initiate a conversation myself (via chat)

I only recently found out reddit had a live chat. I usually use the Apollo iOS app for reddit and it doesn't seem to know about chat.

So many missed messages, mostly spam

someone asked me to beta test some software after I replied to some questions they had about software in a niche forum.

Since I don't install software I don't trust I left it on read.

That's the only time that wasn't straight spam.

Twice, and both were to block/delete a spammer who messaged me

Mine has been filled with spam since they launched it.

I have a couple of long lived "live" chats with a few "friends" going.

Mostly stuff related to whatever subreddit i've encountered the person in, but some of them have evolved over time to more personal chats... not anything GDPR worthy, just general chat :)
