Software engineers that have worked in both US and EU, which one?

A HN commenter pointed out that I should be careful what I wish for. I am from Europe (specifically The Netherlands), wanted to work in the US all the time. I've applied all the time, almost no callbacks (only Facebook, I failed the interview but in my defense I was severely sleep deprived due to nerves).

I always wanted to work in the US simply because I've been growing up with a part of the culture since the internet existed and because the pay seems to be better.

I feel only people who've been working on both sides can comment the situation to answer the question: should I be careful what I wish for here? (aka better pay, experiencing US culture)

I believe more people are in my situation.

I know people from Europe who were miserable here and love it in the US. I know people who have it the other way. I don't have that experience but I think this is very personal and you might have to just try because you'll never know otherwise. You can just move back if you don't like it.

The perk of working in the US is that salaries can be significantly higher, especially at FAANG companies. A good friend of mine in Spain told me her total compensation. She’s earning about 25% of what the same role would pay in the US, at the same exact company.

Granted she would likely work more hours and have far less vacation. American work culture, especially in big tech, puts the company over personal obligations or personal well being. Do consider that trade off.

Go and see it for yourself. I've lived and worked in tech all over the world, and have settled in Europe. But your experiences will be unique, so you'll need to decide for yourself.

I would strongly recommend moving to the US and see for yourself. I generally liked it and it gave me an income that I could have only dreamed of in my native european country.

Don’t assume Canada = US. Don’t assume Quebec = Canada. If you’re going to visit n America check out both neighbours.
