What do you use as your go-to source of world news?
I used to "trust" Google News to give me a reasonable picture of the state of the world, perhaps even with some bias towards things I'm interested in, but now I find it very difficult to navigate. Choosing a region biases the news loads, and I can't choose Europe as a region. I would like something which is as broad as possible, and reports on the important stuff. Nowadays I tend to use the Guardian because I'm fairly progressive-leaning and it seems good enough in terms of quality, and it's also free (I really don't want to have to pay for another subscription, but I understand that beggars can't be choosers). Is there anything else I should check out? With the recent invasion of Ukraine, I have relied more and more on Twitter, but I really struggle to get the signal out of the noise, it's just not proper journalism. What I noticed, however, is that major news outlets tend to just rebroadcast whatever is on Twitter, just with many hours of delay and (hopefully, but not always, given the fast-paced rate at which new stuff happens) with some fact-checking. I am really looking for advice.
Why not read from a collection of different sources from around the world? That's what I do with https://sumi.news.
If you want a single source, I would choose a publication that isn't driven by advertising revenue, like Financial Times.
Now? Reuters. It seems to be the most neutral news in the world, and right now, we need that. Fox, NPR, NBC, MSNBC, CNN, DailyMail and more are full throttle with propaganda tantrums right now. Second most trustworthy is probably WSJ, though I don’t really like a lot of their non opinion content. Now, where do I tend to get my world news stories? Disclose.tv on Twitter, Breaking911, insider paper and BNO News, as well as daily mail. They tend to report on just about everything relevant and usually use AP or Reuters as sources.
A cool trick is to use the search function on HN News. Type in Ukraine, for example.
There are tens, if not hundreds, of good articles, that aren't in the top viewed or top commented.
LeMonde (French) is not perfect, but a step above almost everything else when it comes to major international news.
Western: HN, BBC
World: Al Jazeera
East Asian: South China Morning Post
Local (Malaysia): Government ministries Facebook/Telegram/Twitter feeds
Breaking Points. Krystal and Saagar are fantastic.
