Why isn't there much urgency around climate change?
Why isn't there much urgency around climate change?
Because the climate always changes and the older one is the more variations one has seen. In the 70s, we were continuously warned about the coming ice age, then global warming. When both were shown to be unlikely, it became climate change. With climate change, every serious weather event can be attributed to man regardless of the actual historical facts. Climate change is first and foremost a political movement. If the powers that be were actually serious, they’d focus on countries like China, India, and Brazil and less on the US. Unless of course, the agenda has nothing to do with climate.
I have some conversations with some of my friends which use to be rich. They can not see that change in Earth's climate because they are not from farmer's families. They heavy believe that climate change is just a BS and Greta Thunberg's activism is just a someone's project maybe for earning money in unexpected ways - not a real thing. They can afford to drive some giant SUVs and they use to open their windows at home in winter while heating is working for having both warmness and fresh air. In other words, they refuse to do any changes in their habits. But if you have some convinceable words for them I can ask them and write down here their response.
We are a species that is as of yet not very good at long term planning and consensus. All of our physical and cultural evolution to date has more or less revolved around dealing with relatively immediate threats or short-term goals. So it would seem that unless we can find a way to make the threat of climate change feel more imminent to most people, we really won't start to move in earnest until it actually becomes a more immediate threat or something like nuclear fusion becomes viable and too attractive to ignore.
Because it takes a long time for that to play out and we can likely find ways to pull out the greenhouse gasses and cool the earth by then. Lots of money going in, some countries are on a good trajectory, others are getting worse. So even if the US and EU make good on all the measures, Asian and African countries will lag behind and can argue that they deserve some time to burn fossil fuels to raise their standard of living like the west did.
In short, the idea that climate change is some near term existential risk to humanity is BS
Because it’s difficult to solve in a way that people see immediate, locally beneficial effects.
Most attempts to address climate change require large spending, a change of quality of life, and the benefits are years or decades away. Very few people have the faith and courage to support something on a big scale when it means the loss of immediate convenience, or even just the implication that they lose opportunities.
I guess because focus is on Ukraine right now, which seems worse in the short run. Of course in the long run climate change will probably much more severe. All around bad timing.
