Was COMAL the best way to program the c64 for most hobbyists?
And if so, why is COMAL mostly forgotten now?
COMAL was a very good way of programming the C64, but as I recall it was fairly C64 specific. So unless one of the other 6502 shops (much less the 8080/z80 or 6800 folks) took interest, it wasn't going to last. And they didn't.
