Identifying Talent
I was just reading an article (https://www.theringer.com/nfl/2022/2/23/22946679/rams-super-bowl-nfl-draft-trades) which claimed that no NFL team consistently drafts better players than its competitors. Are there certain tech firms that are better at identifying talent than others? If so, which ones and how do they do it?
Whatever advantage in HR skills and corporate culture might help a company to hire and retain more talented employees, it's unlikely to be significant relative to mostly random factors that cannot be learned or imitated: mere coincidence, good employees recommending a place to good candidates, high expectations for the company (i.e. money) or its products and services and technology (i.e. interesting work), fit between jobs and job seekers... Identifying talent that doesn't want to work for you isn't useful.
I kind of doubt it. The number of employees (players) in the NFL are a much lower size. Each organization is aware of virtually all the potential candidates. Then is somewhat easy to identify the talent due to stanrdized stats and the fact that much of their past performance has been filmed. Sure, some subjective stuff comes into play around potential and stuff.
In IT, it seems like it's all subjective. If it isn't subjective data, then it's not very meaningful and could be gamed (PRs, lines of code, etc).
