Are the days of the “front end engineer” numbered?

I've started noticing over the last few years that pure front end roles have started drying up. It seems everyone only wants to hire "full stack" developers now, which as we know really doesn't mean "full stack" but "mediocre at both" and doing the job of two people. Am I alone in noticing this?

Frontend coding will only get you so far. Eventually you will have to tinker with APIs. I prefer the JAM stack personally, and there's many tools you can offload backend mechanics to, and you don't need to re-invent the wheel when it comes to the backend. Also: The NoCode movement is taking off but I'm not sure if employers are including that in their requirements. It would be nice though.
