They’re required to have a safety driver at the wheel (hands on wheel) in case the driver needs to intervene. The car is driving itself but it is hard to tell. You can tell because they don’t act like a California driver, more like a friendly Canadian or a slightly timid Oregonian. If something unexpected happens you can see the human taking control. I’ve seen them a couple hundred times but only once or twice when I think the safety driver is taking over.

I live in SF and have never seen a driverless Waymo, but have seen countless Waymo cars being driven every day. Now that they are getting a great deal of money for reaching the driverless stage in SF, has anyone actually observed a driverless Waymo in San Francisco? (Its starting to seem a bit like a Theranos product at this point)

LOL, I always thought self driving is a scam. Its just hyped up driver assist.
