For what it seems, people who are SEO vets and the likes claim that most resources and books on SEO are snake oil (not to say worse) and no one can teach you SEO, you can learn it only yourself.

Maybe, share a different opinion? Stories of getting into SEO and utilizing the information you have obtained initially and then succeeded while gradually implementing all the required steps?
