State of Scala?

I've learned basic Scala a few years ago (when the chasm betwen Java-lang and Scala was much wider than today) and it always seemed like a very interesting and promising language to me.

What's the state of Scala nowadays? Is it more popular or less popular than 10 years ago?

If not, is there any new contender in the JVM space that took its place?

Are there any new projects worth knowing?

If you'd like a job doing FP, it is still one of your better chances. The JVM probably puts lots of managers at ease. With a library like Cats, it can be very Haskell-like. I enjoy being paid to write it, but I would never bother with it in my free time. Too big to be fun.

As for popularity, I think Kotlin is pushing it out of the spotlight? I don't really know or care.
