Why were all the popular posts about Web3 posted in the last 2 months?

If you search for "web3" on HN, and sort by popularity for all time...

https://hn.algolia.com/?dateRange=all&page=0&prefix=true&query=Web3&sort=byPopularity&type=story

... you can see that all of the most popular posts have been submitted over the last two months, and the vast majority of those in the last 30 days.

Is this some sort of astroturfing attempt? Have I not used the search properly? Is writing and submitting blog posts about web3 a new trend?

I can't even tell in which direction you think the astroturfing is happening. Because many of the posts are negative. The more likely thing is that it's a trendy topic and people write and share posts about it. And when something becomes a popular topic, of course most of the posts will be from the past month or two. What else could be the case - people talking about web3 before... they were talking about it? That doesn't make any sense.

... web3 is pretty much a new trend/hype topic of the last few months, yes. (I'm aware the term has been used for longer, but way more niche than now)
