To combat brigading, basically. There were automated tools used by people to achieve particular thresholds of dislike counts on videos so as to trigger automated moderation conditions, suppressing content and achieving a temporary shadowbanned, forcing the creator to engage with human moderators to mitigate the damage.

They probably found that dealing with such false positives was more expensive than turning off public view of dislikes. The decision reeks of soulless bean counter thinking.
