Something you did this year that you would do differently

Just a yearly thread on reflection. What is something that you did this year that if you get another chance would do differently. It can be from any aspect of your life.

I hopped from article to article, repo-to-repo in building products. I think this was a carryover from grad school when getting things done was more important than how it was done.

This year, I plan to get less milestones. But each milestone will be better documented with rationale so that anyone picking up after me will have less technical debt to deal with. Here are some things in my roadmap:

* Summarize academic papers I am reading and attach my highlighted paper in Notion

* Assiduously use git for all code - be it even testing or exploratory analysis. Keep a changelog and wiki/confluence for all features

* Maintain a development log file in the repo which explains rationale, background and supporting information.

* Backup all code and data on at least two providers. I use GCP but it might help to use a cron job to weekly rsync my files to OVH or Hetzner.

* Take up one hobby project and do it well, rather than leaving it at less than optimal.

Trying to get back with an ex. Almost never works, but I did it anyhow.

Watched too much news too often. I have a better pattern now.
