Why did intentional programming fail?

I researched Intentional Software for my PhD. The concepts were very ambitious, the tools tweaked to the needs of various enterprise clients. The project was entirely proprietary closed source. Had it been developed more openly it might have gained a greater breadth of researchers and contributions.

I don't know, but I'd presume that it fails far less often than accidental programming.
