Why is all new tech the same?


I remember as a kid, getting excited about what new tech would be released every year, but for the last few years if you search 'hottest new tech' it's always some combination of speakers, headphones, phones and laptops. I want some cool new tech, but are we past the revolutionary generation? Will tech only be evolutionary from now on?

Tech alternates evolutionary / revolutionary oftentimes. Steam engine revolution lasted decades, but viewed from here looks like one thing. 1712 brought newcomen pump engines, james watt was 1760s, rigorously defended his patents so actually impeded innovation. 50 years!

There is plenty of cool tech. mRNA vaccines, prototype quantum computers available for anyone to hire on AWS, high-speed wireless networks, spacecraft sampling the edge of the sun, etc.

People were saying the same thing around the year 1900, that everything in nature was basically explained…
