Resources to learn web design, not CSS

I want to learn about web design, aesthetics, trends, etc. but everything seems to be "here's how you do X in CSS" or "just look at different designs".

What resources can you recommend that teaches you about which layouts work best for different types of websites, different navigation styles (better to have it on the top/side/tucked because of Y), how to match colors and typography, etc?

That's a tough one..

I'm not sure you will find a design article on many specific type of websites, some of them are pretty small markets.

For me, when I start to design a new style website, I usually browse through various similar sites and take screenshots or take notes of the features/design elements that I see that work.

Also Design vary and styles change over time, if you are trying to be competitive start with checking out the competition ,and note what you can improve on such designs.
