HACKER Q&A

HN-like sites for other disciplines?

Hacker News isn't like any other tech news aggregators or forums. The comment sections are filled with a high standard of often very specific domain knowledge, and it's a common occurrence to see 'high profile' (to us) names. You might ask about an esoteric piece of software from decades past and have a response from its creator, or someone who knew them, who worked alongside them.

What are similar niche high-quality online spaces for other fields?

They don't exist. I'd love to see the network of biotechnologists or neurotechnologists but isn't one. Something like that would have to be run by a company that invests in the space (in order to attract involved people via tangential interest) and have some level of moderation. Right now researchers are mostly on twitter because it provides them a way to connect, but twitter is too noisy. The relevant communities in reddit are usually filled with students asking questions about education etc.

I'd love to see stuff on writing or game development (similar to Tigsource back in the day). Forums live and forums die.
