Cryptocurrency as an Employee Bonus?

I will admit that I am pretty skeptical on crypto and the following proposal started as a joke in my office, but I am still curious as to whether anyone has actually tried this.

Has anyone ever received a company's own cryptocurrency as a bonus? Kind of like a cross between an ICO and employee stock options. That is, instead of getting equity in the firm, employees get the firm's coin.

Presumably the value of the token would be in how it is used with the company. And of course there would need to be a secondary market.

You mean like a modern, digital, decentralized version of: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Company_scrip

I'd run the other way.

If there's lockup then pass. If there's not lockup then it might not be a bad idea (depending on the project/tokenomics/marketing/community of course).

I assume crypto companies already do this. Real companies don't issue crypto and probably shouldn't because it's asking for securities trouble.

Yes. You get taxed when received (US) so make sure there is some liquidity for the token.
