Is there a good source of information on HDMI and it's permutations?

I'm looking for insight into why a recently purchased PC's HDMI signal won't work across an HDMI switch (despite it working when directly connected to the display device.)

I don't have confidence that installing a new HDMI switch would result in a successful outcome as I don't know the cause of the current breakdown.

If anyone can point me to good information on the history of HDMI and what versions work with which other ones it would be appreciated :)
