I'm a senior at a big state university, studying Political Science with a minor in Computer Programming.
Through a series of obtuse events, I want to work as a software engineer, but have had trouble getting interviews due to my degree situation. My university only allows a certain number of CS matriculation per class, and I decided to pursue it after my window closed.
I have 2 internships under my belt doing SWE for large tech companies (not FAANG, fwiw), but that hasn't helped me nearly as much as I had hoped. I'm also the vice-president of our hacking club and do a fair amount of programming on my own time.
Any advice would be welcome, especially for crafting an elevator pitch for my degree situation, which seems to be the major roadblock for me at this time.
But what I’d probably do would be to become an open source contributor. Then you can share your github handle on your resume and a competent hiring major will at least check that and see what you’re capable of and give you a shot at an interview.
It’s going to be tough when for the same salary they can probably get a full CS major grad.
