How does bring your own device work at your company?

I work at a small company with many international employees. Today we are shipping them laptops. Most of our software is now on software as a service. But we still have onedrive and everyone is still knee deep in Excel. What is the next step that needs to be done so our employees can be secure without a company issued laptop?

A company not providing all devices necessary to do your job is a huge blaring red flag.

When there are legal issues, any device that has ever had company data on it is fair game for legal discovery.

This means if you’ve used your personal laptop or cellphone to ever log into a company account, you will be legally required to turn it over to company lawyers.

If you wipe it or delete anything including private photos congratulations you’re now guilty of destruction of evidence and potentially obstruction of Justice.

Keep a total and complete firewall between work and personal devices and data.

As an added benefit, this pays dividends on keeping a healthy work life balance.

Not on call? No work phone.

The next step is to issue them a company laptop or give them the funds to buy one

If the data is important, it should be on a work device.
