Who are all these scientists?

I hear it a lot in news stories. "Scientists, say x or y..." But who are they? I know plenty of engineers, doctors, lawyers... and even researchers... but who has a title that is scientist... or is it more of just a general term used when a news articles needs to sound smart?

In general usage like that, you might as well substitute "scholar" or "wise man" or "anointed authority" as the descriptor.

Such things often quote a source or reference an authority you could look into further, "researchers at the University of Binge Drinking say" and the like. "Research conducted by Dr Claude Balls indicated tigers can become testy"

I have "research scientist" as a job title. It's a thing: https://deepmind.com/careers/jobs/469515

Nine out of 10 respondents agree this is a stupid question.

Who are these so-called "respondents"? Is "respondent" a term used when to dress down the cretinous?
