Expectations from Engineering Managers

New as Engineer Manager role for a team I used to be part of, but I have a lot to learn to handle this change.What usually engineers expect from their manager?[0] The former manager was great, making this a more difficult challenge for me.[0] - except more money

Engineers expect their manager to go to bat for them - defend them in front of others ...even if, as soon as the scene is over, they get chewed-out for their monumental stupidity (or whathaveyounot) in private
Engineers expect their manager to shield them from as much of the uphill bs as possible
Engineers expect their managers to brag on their team (when they're doing well), and to take responsibility for for any failures
