This site has some child/teen sexual abuse statistics:

https://www.rainn.org/statistics/children-and-teens

It says: "In FY16 alone, Child Protective Services agencies substantiated, or found strong evidence to indicate that, 57,329 children were victims of sexual abuse.(1)"

It also says: "One in 9 girls and 1 in 53 boys under the age of 18 experience sexual abuse or assault at the hands of an adult.(3)"

Number of children in the US: around 75M: https://www.statista.com/statistics/457786/number-of-childre...

This site has statistics on child hunger:

https://www.childrensdefense.org/state-of-americas-children/...

It says: "In 2019, more than 1 in 7 children—10.7 million—were food insecure, meaning they lived in households where not everyone had enough to eat"

This last statistic about hunger actually makes sense: 1 in 7 is 10.7M if there are 75M total children.

The earlier statistic that 1 in 9 girls suffer sexual abuse and there were 57K total cases (boys & girls) in 2016, makes no sense. There are ~37M girls under 18 in the US. 1 in 9 would be ~4M cases of female child sexual abuse, not 57K total.

If the 57K total number is correct, then even assuming all victims were female, that would be 1 in 650, not 1 in 9.

No reasonable person condones child abuse of any kind. But exaggerating the magnitude of the problem and monitoring every person's phone on the planet are not IMO good ways of helping to solve the problem.

Or about child exploitation more generally.

I read a lot, and often read some long stories from the NYT or similar, and they'll do these great detailed stories on child abuse/etc., and my one memory of those types of articles seems to be that...

The various agencies/programs doing really good work just need more money.

Ideally a lot more money.

But I haven't paid attention in forever, so there are prob lots of good solutions that don't require us to be dominated even more by our corporate overlords.

Its not dead yet is it?

Apple have changed the bit no one found particularly controversial (the source of the hashs). But have decided to keep the rest because why listen to customers when you can shout them down?
