How do you know it's time for a new job?
How do you know it's time for a new job?
Making a post on HN asking how people know when it's time for a new job.
More seriously -- when you become the smartest person in the room, assuming your job isn't being a researcher (or a similar level of autonomy).
It always is, there's no harm in being prepared with contingency plans, question is does your reasons to leave outweigh your reasons to stay?
It might not even be a new job, but maybe a new hobby project, a new side gig, or a new stream of income that you might need. Maybe you just need to blow off some steam, loosen up, get on track with your exercise or quality of food or time with yourself or people you care about.
It varies.
When you no longer feel you are learning or when the projects no longer stretch you with challenges.
A stagnation of challenging projects can also indicate a general stagnation in the company. That will eventually show up in business results. If see this, it makes sense to start looking around and joining a business that is more driven and aims high.
It's never not time for a new job; always be looking. Job hoppers statistically make a significant amount more in total compensation than non-hoppers.
Many many reasons; loss of trust with employer, no connection with colleagues, no fulfilment in work, want something new, not feeling valued....
When you feel that the current job is a waste of your time and that you should be doing something else.
It's not clear cut. It's not always about better pay or not liking your boss or not getting that promotion. Sometimes you just outgrow your job. Sometimes you feel like you should be playing as a small player in a higher division, than a key player in a lower division.
When I start looking forward to Fridays from Monday itself. On a serious note it is when one of compensation, learning or work life balance get so bad that I start hating start of the work day.
Only once it has been that these were alright but I wanted to start my own gig.
When the stuff I plan to talk about in the interview isn’t stuff I’ve done recently. When I feel like I’ve stopped making progress and stopped doing interesting things.
When months go by and you feel you have not learned anything new, or when you no longer feel the work you are doing is ethical.
get ready. face interviews. look at the offers. and then decide. if the offer is good: w.r.t money, work, designation, etc such factors. move.
Depends on what your options are.
