Solution to follow breaking news without browsing

I waste multiple hours each day on Reddit and HN. My solution to this is that I sign up for Sunday morning digests that give me the top 20 posts from the past week. I’d like to stay up to date with current important events (stuff like the evergiven ship, COVID status updates, major scandals, etc) without wasting time reading fluff. If I download a typical news aggregator app like Google News, I know that it will simply become the scrolling habit that Reddit and HN were. Can anyone think of any solutions for this? I’d be willing to pay a subscription.

There was a great app a few years back called Circa that let you subscribe to a news item. When there were story updates they would give the new facts as an update.

After that shut down my solution was to stop caring about being up to date.

Now when a big news story happens I haven’t heard about yet, it is an opportunity to have a conversation with the person telling me. If it seems really newsworthy I look it up later to fill in the details.

no good solution ..

Try: https://hckrnews.com/ and select "top 10"

or create a HN "summary startup" :-)
