Practical ways to make local communities resilient?

While I find our progress as a species very exciting, I can’t help but think to the possible ways it could halt or slow.

While globalism is great, I (rightly or wrongly) think that individuals and communities should be self-sufficient where possible.

Observing how effective has been at disrupting societies, I fear the outcome of something less forgiving.

I write the under the shadow of impeding climate change, as groups of imperfect humans hold the keys to nuclear warfare. It’s not to speak of threats we are yet to identify, or are too complex to go into here.

Are local communities key to resilience against the potential downfall of civilisation? I understand this may be quite dramatic, but it seems that striving for local self sufficiency also positively impacts the climate.

It’s not clear to me how I can make my small town more self sufficient and independent for the future. Does anyone here have any tips? What should be prioritised (there’s plenty of water)? What’s the 80/20 of self sufficient communities?

While I fully support you and want to tell you to keep going, I can easily see how this will go nowhere with the Hacker News community.

Reason being tech is mostly about centralization nowadays and screwing over your neighbor in various not-so-obvious ways. This in it's own right comes from the massive leverage one could exercise if given control over a specific societal lever - that desire is as old as time and I don't see it going away.

That said we desperately need people like you to somewhat combat this somewhat expanding spiral. My best bet is to actually look in a place which you probably won't expect - the Bible. No, not joking, a lot of the information in there contains incredibly practical and time proven methods for building societies and the follies of societies in times gone by. It is not a coincidence it is behind so much of European culture and it's fruits.

Good luck and keep fighting the good fight!

. Improve relationships between the community . Not dependent from the estate or the government for the providing of services (water, light...) . Auto sufficient in providing food to the community
