What's your favorite mind mapping tool?

All the mind mapping software I've tried hasn't been very good. Usually the UI was clunky and lacked keyboard shortcuts. And/or the design looked like something from last decade. And finally they haven't seemed very powerful.

Are there any fast, pretty, quick-to-use mind mapping tools I've accidentally missed?

Post-it notes on brown paper on a wall.

I mean, unless you’re making them by yourself, the digital tools are probably always going to be worse than something that everyone can get up and move around very easily.

I really like markmap: https://markmap.js.org/

I have the habit of writing notes in Markdown anyway and, with minor modifications, markmap will visualize it.

There is also a plugin for VSCode: https://marketplace.visualstudio.com/items?itemName=gera2ld....

I just played around with VYM a bit (after looking at this list [0]), seems to work ok when you know the shortcuts, I might use that in the future.

Maybe you can help me - I need a mind mapping tool where I can build a tree not only in top to bottom direction but vice versa. For example I have b=>c=>d and I want to get a=>b=>c=>d . I have tried several mind mapping tools but none of them can do it.

I haven't used this one yet but it is free for the next day or so on the Windows store - https://user.camp/apps/mind-maps-pro/
