How do you build your personal brand?

Hello HN,

What are some effective practices on how to build an online presence and a strong personal brand

1. Answer what do you want to see when people google you? 2. Start from there, build a website. 3. Choose a social media platform where you will find the like minded people you want to share your life with. Out of all the social channels, you will have to focus on 1 the majority of time - facebook, instagram, linkedin, twitter. You will have to experiment with this to figure it out. 4. Start participating in high traffic visibility websites like hackernews, reddits, indiehackers etc. 5. Stay consistent. Treat this as an everyday channel and share every single day. You will definitely have a compounding effect. 6. All of this could be exhausting and you can feel burnt out, make sure to keep things in schedule and keep your mind fresh with hobbies or hanging out with friends. This will help you to be in the race for a longer time.

Help people. Preferably in an area with the following attributes:

   * you are an expert in, or willing to learn a lot about for years
   * relatively focused (so, React, not webdev. better is react hooks)
   * technical
Find people talking about this in online communities. Read their questions, answer or research them.

Amy Hoy has great insights about this: https://stackingthebricks.com/articles/ (she covers this in the context of building a business but it works in the context of building a brand)

You can help people in other ways too: help run a meetup. Speak at meetups. Mentor.

But participating in an online focused niche scales far better than other methods.

Write articles and post them on LinkedIn, Medium, or a personal website. Create a personal website to showcase your portfolio. Print business cards with a tagline that highlights the thing you’re known for. Incorporate your tagline into your elevator pitch. Seek out small speaking engagements.
