I made a card that says that we do not need password confirmation fields in sign up forms.
My arguments:
- If the user typed it wrong, you should have password recovery page
- You also have show/hide password icon
- Often users have password managers
- If the user types password first time, he will probably copy-paste in in the second field? Well, some percent of users do that
- And we also have social sign up
So, basically, I think the less fields we have - the better.
But I met some critique regarding this approach.
So I'm gathering pros / cons that I'll put in an article later.
Thoughts?
The recovery screen is a hassle, and not something you want to subject users to when they're just starting to use your site.
Users who copypaste passwords like that deserve what they get. It's a bad practice. Use a password manager, or learn to type.
Show Passwords is good, but they're hidden for a reason. Maybe not a good reason in these days of private devices, but as long as you're not showing passwords by default, confirmation is a good idea.
I'm all for social sign-on, but some users don't/can't use it. (I just lost a Facebook account for utterly idiotic reasons. I was glad nothing important was tied to it.)
