Why did Chrome stop auto-updating?

Google Chrome used to automatically update itself but now an Update button appears in the top right requiring the user to perform the update manually.Any idea why they started doing this?

There was a security incident.Chrome updates to a version which had a vulnerability and there was a window period, later on chrome updates to a version which didn't have that vulnerability.Someone noticed this and made the report publicly available.
